Sheet steel roofing and siding has been used on agricultural buildings for many years. The first products were galvanized sheets corrugated in a sinusoidal shape. Many of these installations are still in existence, although some are quite rusty, attesting to the longevity of sheet steel. In these early days, corrugated sheet steel was unpainted and gave a very utilitarian look to the building. The traditional siding material for farm buildings at the time was wood, which was in great abundance. Well times have changed.

Pre-painted sheet steel is now the standard roofing and siding product used on agricultural buildings across North America. Sheet steel is extremely economical, durable, easy to install and readily available. The sheets are normally about 36 inch wide providing wide coverage, and available in a range of profiles and thicknesses to satisfy both structural and aesthetic considerations. Farm buildings are going beyond the utilitarian look of the past and incorporating the variety of steel products and colours into very attractive building packages, at an economical cost.

Lightweight sheet steel cladding products are available from most building supply stores or lumber yards. Also available are the accessories, flashings and trims needed to complete the job.
